Atsedemariam Fikre
Atsedemariam Fikre began her singing journey at just 12 years old in a girls’ club at her primary school. In 1990, at around 14 years old, she participated in Ethiopian Idol, where she reached the top ten. However, she was unable to advance further or produce a video clip due to her age. At the same age, she secured her first professional role as a singer with the West Command Defense Force, where she performed for eight years. Following this, she joined the Bahir Dar Culture and Tourism Bureau and sang at Mulualem Hall for five years.
Atsede’s significant career moment arrived in 2019, when Muzikawi discovered her at the Selam Festival in Bahir Dar. Performing alongside top musicians such as Henock Temesgen and Girum Mezmur, Atsedemariam’s powerful presence and connection to Ethiopian traditions led to this exciting collaboration titled ‘Biruh’.
Jorga Mesfin, alongside legendary musicians Teferi Assefa, Girum Mezmur, and Henock Temesgen, came together in the studio to create this piece of music that radiates hope, joy, and an uplifting energy. This composition is anchored in the unique and authentic Ethiopian mode known as “Anchihoye Lene,” infusing the track with a distinctly Ethiopian sound. The arrangement features a full live brass section that powerfully mimics the rich, resonant tones of the Ethiopian brass bands from the 1960s and 70s, evoking memories of the Imperial Majesty Band and similar ensembles. The brass section plays with a syncopated and rhythmic intensity, layering multiple parts that roar with vitality.
Atsedemariam’s voice carries the legacy of Ethiopia’s rich musical heritage, deeply influenced by the iconic voices of Aster Aweke, Bizunesh Bekele, and Kuku Sebsebie. Her technique and vocal color bear a striking resemblance to Aster Aweke, capturing the same depth of emotion and effortless grace that have made Aster a legend in Ethiopian music.
